Fox: Is Mr. Rogers Evil? (Hint: No. He is really, really, really not evil.)

By Paul Calhoun, March 5, 2010

In 2008, Fox claimed that Fred Rogers, the man who unquestionably made my childhood better, is evil.   This isn’t worth the rant.  Here’s the clip:

Since Mr. Rogers can’t speak for himself, and a tirade from me wouldn’t be too helpful, I’ll let Tom Junod speak for the friendly man in the cardigan sweater:

Mister Rogers went onstage to accept the award — and there, in front of all the soap opera stars and talk show sinceratrons, in front of all the jutting man-tanned jaws and jutting saltwater bosoms, he made his small bow and said into the microphone:

“All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are. Ten seconds of silence.” And then he lifted his wrist, looked at the audience, looked at his watch, and said, ‘I’ll watch the time.”

There was, at first, a small whoop from the crowd, a giddy, strangled hiccup of laughter, as people realized that he wasn’t kidding, that Mister Rogers was not some convenient eunuch, but rather a man, an authority figure who actually expected them to do what he asked. And so they did. One second, two seconds, seven seconds — and now the jaws clenched, and the bosoms heaved, and the mascara ran, and the tears fell upon the beglittered gathering like rain leaking down a crystal chandelier. And Mister Rogers finally looked up from his watch and said softly “May God be with you,” to all his vanquished children.

Barack Obama Soundboard (NSFW)

By Paul Calhoun, February 26, 2010

I found a series of soundbites from the audiobook version Dreams From My Father, read by the author, where Barack quotes a fellow classmate.  This wouldn’t be anything special, except that the classmate has something of a dirty mouth.  Hilarity ensues:

(I supported and continue to support the President, not because he’s the president and certainly not because he’s black.  I support him because I agree with most of his policies/promises and, from where I’m standing, he’s done an excellent job so far.  Not even kidding.)

1984 in RL: Webcams

By Christina Emily Belisle, February 22, 2010

In a way that echoes 1984, it’s come to light that laptops in Lower Merion School District in Pennsylvania contain software that allows the built-in webcams to be turned on and take still photos.  This can be done remotely, and one such picture has been used to discipline a student.  When he was in his own home, he ate a Mike-and-Ike, which the school thought was a pill, and he was disciplined for it.

UV Inks

By Christina Emily Belisle, February 21, 2010

Everyone knows that black lights make things look cool.  Whites glow, you can see even though it’s dark, and everything appears just a bit more awesome.  Even the Boston Aquarium has a section with black lights.  Because even fish need to party sometimes.
